March and April are precarious months for the UK wine industry. This is the period when vine buds burst into leaf and when they are particularly vulnerable to frost damage.
Maploom has been commissioned by viticulture specialists Vinescapes to create an online recording app and dashboard tracking bud burst of vines in UK Vineyards which will help alert growers to frost risks.
The app tracks the onset of spring by allowing growers to record the location, date and variety of grapes coming into leaf. This information is fed via an API into WeatherQuest’s models which predict the geographical distribution of frost risk at this crucial time so that growers can act to apply frost protection measures.
Maploom’s data collection, mapping and dashboard tools have been used to create the app which is supported by WeatherQuest, VineWatch, UKRI, Plumpton College and Wine GB.
